Cologne Ford: Contract Rejected

The article discusses a developing situation at a car component plant, seemingly in Germany, where the union IG Metall (IGM) and the works council are promoting an “overall solution” that workers fear will lead to the plant’s closure. This “overall solution” appears to be a negotiated “Social Contract” that the article argues will result in a gradual shutdown of the factory. The article strongly urges workers to reject this Social Contract and, more importantly, to begin preparing for strike actions independent of the union leadership. The central argument is that the union apparatus is complicit in a plan that will ultimately cost workers their jobs, and therefore, workers must organize independently to protect their interests and fight against the plant’s closure.
