South Sudan’s Accidental Immigrant

Mexican citizen Jose Luis Saavedra was repatriated from South Sudan after being stranded there for over four months. Saavedra traveled to South Sudan in December 2023 to work for a company contracted by the United Nations, but his work permit was not processed correctly. After his contract ended in February 2024, he was unable to leave the country due to immigration issues and the company abandoning him.

He faced significant challenges, including a lack of funds, food, and communication with his family. Saavedra contacted the Mexican embassy in Egypt, which, lacking a physical presence in South Sudan, coordinated with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to assist him. The IOM provided shelter, food, and ultimately facilitated his departure from the country.

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Saavedra’s safe return to Mexico and thanked the IOM for its humanitarian support in resolving the complex situation. The case highlights the vulnerability of foreign workers in conflict-affected regions and the importance of international cooperation in providing assistance during crises.
