Pudding Brawl

The World Black Pudding Throwing Championships, held annually in Ramsbottom, England, involves competitors throwing black puddings at a stack of Yorkshire puddings perched on a 20-foot-high plinth. The aim is to dislodge as many Yorkshire puddings as possible with three throws. The tradition stems from the War of the Roses, specifically a battle in Stubbins in 1455 where, legend says, the Lancastrian soldiers ran out of ammunition and resorted to throwing food at the Yorkist soldiers.

The event, more lighthearted than historically accurate, draws hundreds of participants and spectators each year. Competitors come from diverse backgrounds and ages, and there are no formal rules or regulations beyond throwing the black pudding underarm.

The championships provide a day of community fun and entertainment, with fairground rides, food stalls, and other attractions surrounding the main throwing event. While there are prizes for the winners who knock down the most Yorkshire puddings, the primary focus is on participation and enjoying a quirky, quintessentially British tradition.
