Socialist Rise

This article argues that the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike against the Big Three automakers (GM, Ford, and Stellantis) is at a critical juncture. The author contends that the UAW leadership, under President Shawn Fain, is attempting to prevent a genuine struggle by the rank-and-file workers. They allege that the UAW is isolating workers at different plants and companies, promoting the illusion that significant gains can be won without a broader, unified fight.

The article criticizes the UAW’s bargaining strategy, claiming it’s designed to reach a deal that protects the union bureaucracy’s interests while leaving fundamental issues like tiered wages and job security unresolved. It also condemns the union’s acceptance of electric vehicle production plans, arguing that these will lead to job losses.

The author calls for workers to take control of the strike, expand it across the industry, and demand the abolition of the tiered wage system, restoration of cost-of-living adjustments, and guarantees of job security, particularly in the transition to electric vehicles. The author advocates for independent political mobilization of the working class, outside of the control of the UAW bureaucracy and the Labour Party, in order to fight for socialist solutions.
