Volkov’s Border Arrest

Pavel Volkov, a Russian violinist, has gained attention for his anti-war protests against the Ukraine war and Vladimir Putin’s regime. He began his public opposition shortly after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, playing with a blue and yellow ribbon – the colors of the Ukrainian flag. Volkov’s actions escalated at the BBC Proms, a prestigious international music festival held in London. During his performance with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, he displayed a handwritten sign that read “Artists Against War,” protesting the ongoing conflict. This act generated significant media coverage and ignited a debate about the role of artists in political activism, particularly regarding sensitive international issues. His demonstration at the Proms was deliberately chosen due to its visibility on the international stage.
