Air Force Chief of Staff General Charles Q. Brown Jr. announced a sweeping reorganization plan aimed at preparing the Air Force for future conflicts, particularly with China. The initiative, dubbed “Re-Optimizing for Great Power Competition,” will involve significant changes to the force’s structure, training, and technological investments.
A key element is the establishment of “Integrated Combat Wings,” intended to streamline command and control and improve the Air Force’s ability to respond rapidly to threats. These wings will be designed to operate more autonomously and be capable of quickly dispersing to avoid becoming targets.
The reorganization will also focus on accelerating the development and deployment of advanced technologies like uncrewed aircraft, artificial intelligence, and hypersonic weapons. The Air Force plans to restructure its acquisition processes to be more agile and efficient.
Brown emphasized the need to adapt to a rapidly changing security environment, particularly the increasing military capabilities of China. He stressed that the Air Force must be ready to deter aggression and, if necessary, prevail in a conflict. The changes are intended to better integrate air and space capabilities, improve coordination with other military branches, and strengthen alliances with partner nations. The plan is slated to be implemented in phases, with initial changes beginning in the coming months.
