Pirate Showdown: Petty Officer Honored

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Seth Stone received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his heroic actions during a shooting in Atlanta on May 3, 2023. Stone, a hospital corpsman assigned to the Navy Reserve component at the Naval Air Station Atlanta, was walking near the Northside Medical Midtown building when a gunman opened fire, killing one and wounding four others.

Without hesitation, Stone, despite being unarmed and off duty, rushed towards the sound of gunfire. He identified himself as a corpsman and began providing medical assistance to the wounded victims. He used his belt as a tourniquet to help stop the bleeding of a critically injured individual, likely saving their life. Stone then triaged the remaining victims, providing further care until first responders arrived on the scene.

The award citation emphasizes Stone’s courage, initiative, and complete disregard for his personal safety in the face of imminent danger. His actions reflect great credit upon himself and uphold the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He is credited with significantly mitigating the potential for further loss of life and providing crucial aid to those injured in the attack.
