Lacrosse Hazing: Surrender Deadline

San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas dismissed charges against eleven high school students initially facing felony assault and hate crime allegations stemming from a large brawl at a Tokay High School football game in Lodi, California. The incident involved a physical altercation between two groups of students, resulting in injuries.

Initially, law enforcement pursued charges including assault with a deadly weapon and hate crime enhancements, based on the belief that the fight was racially motivated. However, after a thorough review of the evidence, including video footage and witness testimonies, the DA’s office determined that the evidence did not support the initial charges or the claim that the attack was motivated by racial bias.

DA Freitas emphasized the importance of a fair and just legal process, stating that his office has a responsibility to ensure that charges are supported by credible evidence. He highlighted the challenges of prosecuting minors and the potential impact of felony convictions on their futures.

Instead of pursuing felony charges, the DA’s office opted to refer the students to the San Joaquin County Juvenile Justice Center for possible interventions and restorative justice programs. These programs focus on accountability, rehabilitation, and repairing harm caused to the community. The decision aims to address the underlying issues that led to the fight while avoiding the potentially life-altering consequences of a felony conviction for the young individuals involved. The DA’s office will continue to investigate the incident.
