As labor unions across the U.S. ramp up strikes in response to unsafe conditions and stagnant wages, religious groups from diverse backgrounds are stepping up in support.
Catholic nuns marching with hotel workers. Muslim community centers providing meals for striking delivery drivers. Jewish rabbis calling for Shabbat sermons on justice for the working poor. Even Unitarian Universalists and Buddhist sanghas are organizing solidarity circles.
The spiritual message is clear: workers deserve dignity.
“Labor rights are human rights, and human rights are sacred,” says Father Jonathan Reyes, a progressive Catholic priest from Chicago.
While not every religious group agrees, the interfaith labor justice movement is growing louder, refusing to stay silent as inequality deepens.
