Justice Served: Officer’s Plea Ends Career

Keith Thornton, a Chicago police officer known as “Bang Bang Thornton” for his aggressive tactics and high number of shootings, ended his career with a plea deal. Facing charges of aggravated battery with a firearm related to a 2022 off-duty shooting, Thornton pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He was sentenced to two years of probation and relinquished his police powers, effectively ending his employment with the Chicago Police Department.

The shooting occurred after a traffic altercation on the Dan Ryan Expressway. Thornton, off-duty at the time, fired shots at another vehicle, injuring a man. This incident added to a history of controversy surrounding Thornton. He had previously been involved in multiple on-duty shootings, some of which resulted in fatalities, and had faced numerous civilian complaints. While many shootings were deemed justified, his aggressive approach and the sheer volume of incidents drew criticism.

The plea deal allowed Thornton to avoid prison time and a felony conviction. However, the agreement stipulated the surrender of his police powers, thus ending his career. The case highlights the ongoing scrutiny of police use of force and the accountability of officers in controversial shootings.
