University Workers’ Stand.

Workers at the University of Minnesota, represented by Teamsters Local 320, were on the verge of a significant strike due to stalled contract negotiations. The 1,400 employees, including custodians, cooks, maintenance staff, and dorm workers, sought better wages and benefits, citing the rising cost of living and the university’s substantial financial resources.

Rank-and-file workers voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike to address issues like wage stagnation and increased healthcare costs, particularly impacting lower-paid staff. The union bargaining committee, however, reached a tentative agreement with the university administration, averting the strike.

This agreement, presented to the membership for ratification, was met with considerable opposition due to concerns about insufficient wage increases and inadequate improvements to healthcare benefits. Many workers felt the proposed contract did not adequately address their needs, especially in the face of inflation and the university’s financial health.
