Dr. Fauci and his family have been receiving death threats from people who adamantly believe they are responsible for COVID-19. Fauci is the lead scientist for COVID-19 relief efforts. Since the beginning of COVID-19 cases in America, Trump and his base have been dehumanizing Fauci, Asians, government officials, the media, and scientists, blaming them for COVID-19 happening in America. This is very dangerous rhetoric. By dehumanizing others, people feel justified to do harm towards those who are dehumanized. What’s happening now with Fauci and his family is a perfect example of what can happen if dehumanization becomes normalized. People feel justified to do harm towards others. It’s sick, and it is very dangerous rhetoric. Dehumanization should never be normalized. People should be treated with empathy and understanding. Systems, on the other hand, need to be challenged with great fervency. It is one thing to fight systems. It’s another thing entirely to dehumanize individuals and treat them like they are subhuman.
