The most immediate threat remains the continued heavy rainfall, predicted to cause major flooding across inland Queensland. Rivers are expected to swell, isolating communities and inundating agricultural lands. The cyclone disrupted power supplies, cutting electricity to tens of thousands of homes and businesses.
Furthermore, the economic impact on Queensland’s agricultural sector is expected to be substantial. The region is a major producer of crops like sugar cane, mangoes, and beef, all of which are vulnerable to flood damage and strong winds. The potential for crop losses and livestock deaths could lead to higher food prices and economic hardship for farmers and rural communities. The recovery process will be long and costly.
