Judge’s Car Wash Justice

A Michigan judge, Jeffrey Middleton, is under investigation by the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission for his handling of a shoplifting case involving two women accused of stealing from Walmart. Middleton reportedly offered the women a “deal” where they could avoid jail time and have their charges dismissed if they allowed themselves to be handcuffed together for an hour in the courthouse, publicly displaying signs stating “I stole from Walmart.”

The incident, which took place in Lenawee County District Court, sparked controversy and accusations of humiliation and abuse of power. Critics argued that Middleton’s actions were inappropriate and potentially violated the women’s rights. The women accepted the offer, but their attorneys later filed a complaint against the judge.

The Judicial Tenure Commission subsequently filed a formal complaint against Middleton, alleging judicial misconduct and abuse of power. The complaint claims his actions were contrary to established legal practices and undermined the integrity of the judicial system. Middleton has since apologized for his actions, acknowledging that he made a mistake and exercised poor judgment. The commission is now investigating the matter and will determine whether to recommend disciplinary action against the judge.
