Echoes of Lithuania

Four U.S. soldiers have died by apparent suicide in recent months at Fort Cavazos, Texas, raising concerns about mental health within the military. The latest death occurred on June 18th, prompting an investigation by the Army Criminal Investigation Division. The soldier’s name is being withheld pending family notification.

This follows three similar incidents: one in May and two in March. In May, the body of Sergeant Major Jeremy Womack was found unresponsive in his residence on post. Details surrounding the March deaths have not been widely released.

Fort Cavazos, formerly known as Fort Hood, has faced scrutiny in recent years following a series of deaths and disappearances, including the case of Spc. Vanessa Guillén in 2020, whose murder sparked a national conversation about sexual harassment and assault in the military. The post leadership acknowledges the gravity of the situation and is emphasizing available mental health resources and support services for soldiers and their families. The Army is committed to reducing the stigma surrounding mental health care and encouraging soldiers to seek help when needed. Investigations into each death are ongoing.
