NIOSH Cuts: Risks for US Workers

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is facing significant staff reductions due to budget constraints, potentially impacting worker safety across the United States. Internal documents reveal that around 20% of NIOSH’s workforce, approximately 225 positions, could be eliminated. These layoffs are driven by flat funding over the past decade coupled with rising operational costs, including increased rent and inflation.

The potential impact is wide-ranging. NIOSH conducts critical research into workplace hazards and develops safety standards and recommendations. The agency’s work addresses issues like chemical exposure, respiratory illnesses, workplace violence, and emerging threats like heat stress. Staff cuts could slow down or eliminate ongoing research projects and impede the agency’s ability to respond to new and emerging occupational health threats.

Specifically, the layoffs are expected to affect various divisions, including those focusing on respiratory health, personal protective technology, and workplace safety research. This could leave American workers more vulnerable to preventable injuries and illnesses, particularly in high-risk sectors like construction, agriculture, and healthcare. Concerns are also raised about NIOSH’s ability to effectively partner with industry, labor unions, and other stakeholders to implement safety improvements.
