Leipzig: War & Words

The 2024 Leipzig Book Fair was heavily influenced by the pervasive issue of war. The fair highlighted a tension between pro-war sentiments promoted by certain exhibitors and a growing anti-war feeling among attendees. Some entities used the platform to advance narratives supporting great power interests and military agendas. This promotion of warmongering created a noticeable presence within the fair’s programming and displays.

Simultaneously, a counter-current of anti-war sentiment was evident. Many visitors expressed opposition to conflict, using the book fair to engage with literature and discussions that critiqued war and its impact. This opposing viewpoint suggested a wider public concern about escalating global tensions and the role of various powers in perpetuating them. The fair, therefore, inadvertently showcased a divided perspective on war, highlighting both its promotion and the resistance against it.
