Leadership Shift at MCAS Beaufort

Lieutenant Colonel Brian T. Koch, the commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort, South Carolina, was relieved of his command on Monday, June 3, 2024. The announcement was made by Marine Corps officials who cited a loss of trust and confidence in his ability to command.

The decision to relieve Koch was made by Major General Scott F. Benedict, the commanding general of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. The official statement provided no specific details regarding the reasons for the loss of trust and confidence.

Lieutenant Colonel Matthew C. Lewis, the Inspector-Instructor of Marine Fighter Training Squadron 501, has been appointed as the interim commanding officer of MCAS Beaufort. Lewis will hold this position until a permanent replacement is identified and assigned.

MCAS Beaufort is a major Marine Corps air station that supports F/A-18 fighter squadrons and is home to the F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter training program. The air station plays a crucial role in training and deploying Marine Corps aviation assets. The change in command is expected to have minimal immediate impact on the ongoing operations of the base.
