Maryland high school student, Saumya Krishna, is working to revolutionize the treatment of sepsis with her invention, a rapid sepsis detection device. Inspired by a family friend’s near-fatal experience with the condition, she aimed to address the critical need for faster diagnosis, as current methods can take hours, significantly impacting survival rates.

Her device utilizes microfluidics to analyze blood samples for multiple sepsis biomarkers simultaneously and rapidly. It’s designed to be portable and affordable, making it accessible in resource-limited settings. Saumya’s invention has garnered significant attention, winning numerous science fair awards, including the Regeneron Science Talent Search.

She is currently working to improve the device’s sensitivity and specificity, aiming for clinical validation. Beyond the technical aspects, Saumya emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and communication in scientific innovation. She hopes to inspire other young people, particularly girls, to pursue STEM fields and use their knowledge to solve global challenges. Her long-term goal is to make a tangible difference in healthcare and improve outcomes for sepsis patients worldwide.
