Over 3,000 Pratt & Whitney jet engine workers in Connecticut are currently on strike after voting down a proposed contract on May 4. The workers, members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 26, are employed at the company’s East Hartford and Middletown plants.
The rejected contract included wage increases, but workers deemed them insufficient in the face of rising inflation and the company’s significant profits. Concerns also center around healthcare costs and retirement security. Workers are seeking a more substantial raise, improvements to their healthcare plan, and stronger guarantees regarding their retirement benefits.
Union leaders have stated that the company’s offer fails to adequately reward the workers’ contributions to Pratt & Whitney’s success and does not reflect the rising cost of living.
