AI Replaced, Dreams Derailed

A software engineer, Naveen Kumar, recounts his experience of being laid off from his $150,000-a-year job at a tech company after just 11 months. Kumar was hired as a senior engineer, a role he felt qualified for based on his previous experience. However, he quickly realized that his tasks were below his skill level, primarily involving fixing minor bugs.

Kumar voiced his concerns about the lack of challenging work and opportunities for growth to his manager. He even suggested ways to contribute more significantly to the team. Despite these efforts, his role remained unchanged.

The company subsequently underwent layoffs, and Kumar was among those let go. The rationale given was that his performance did not meet expectations, a claim he disputes given the limited scope of his assigned tasks. He believes he was unfairly targeted due to his higher salary and the perceived lack of value he brought to the team in his underutilized role.

Since the layoff, Kumar has been actively searching for a new job, emphasizing his willingness to take on more challenging projects and contribute meaningfully. He is sharing his story to highlight the importance of matching employee skills with appropriate responsibilities and to encourage open communication between employers and employees about role expectations and growth opportunities. He hopes his experience can serve as a cautionary tale for both companies and professionals navigating the competitive tech landscape.
