Comey: Protected

Former FBI Director James Comey, in an interview with CBS Mornings, revealed that he surrendered a classified document to the FBI upon learning it might contain classified information. This document, stored on a personal device, stemmed from his time as FBI Director and involved a letter he wrote reflecting on his interactions with then-President-elect Donald Trump.

Comey explained that he drafted the letter shortly after his first meeting with Trump in January 2017 to document the conversation and emailed it to himself, which was permissible at the time. He later shared the letter with his lawyers and used portions of it in his 2018 memoir, “A Higher Loyalty.”

The potential classification issue arose years later, during a security review, when the Justice Department flagged a paragraph of the letter as possibly containing classified information. Upon being notified, Comey promptly surrendered the document to the FBI. He maintains that he had no knowledge of the classified status at the time he shared the document and believes it was later retroactively classified.

Comey emphasized his cooperation with the government and his commitment to national security, stating he would never intentionally share classified information. The situation highlights the complexities of handling sensitive documents after leaving government service and the challenges of retroactive classification.
