India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that a shift in India’s diplomatic tactics contributed to the release of eight former Indian Navy personnel who had been detained in Qatar since August 2022. These individuals were initially sentenced to death on espionage charges, which were later commuted to varying prison sentences.
Jaiswal refrained from divulging specific details about the strategies employed, emphasizing their sensitive nature and potential implications for future similar situations. He acknowledged the ongoing diplomatic efforts and consistent engagement with Qatari authorities as crucial. He highlighted that India maintained close contact with Qatari officials at various levels to secure the release of the veterans.
The men were employed by Dahra Global Technologies, a private company providing training and other services to Qatar’s armed forces. While the charges against them were never officially disclosed, it was widely speculated that they involved espionage for Israel.
Seven of the eight men have returned to India. Jaiswal conveyed the government’s gratitude to the Emir of Qatar for his decision to release the men and allow them to return home, signaling a positive outcome from the intricate diplomatic negotiations. The return of the veterans is considered a major diplomatic success for India.
