California Dreamin’: $5,000 Tip

A California woman, Nidia Villeda, believed she had won a $10,000 jackpot on a California Lottery scratcher ticket, the “Lucky Riches” game. She scratched the ticket and scanned it using the California Lottery app, which displayed a congratulatory message and indicated she had won $10,000. Overjoyed, she took a photo of the screen and showed it to her family.

However, when she went to claim her prize at the Lottery District Office in Van Nuys, she was told the ticket was only worth $5. Lottery officials explained that the app sometimes malfunctions and displays incorrect information. Villeda was devastated by the discrepancy, feeling misled and robbed of her perceived winnings.

Despite her disappointment, she received the $5 payout from the ticket. Villeda believes the lottery should honor what the app initially displayed. The California Lottery acknowledged the incident and stated they are investigating the issue to determine the cause of the error. They also emphasized that the official winning amount is always verified by their system when the ticket is redeemed. Villeda is now skeptical of the app and the Lottery itself, urging others to be cautious.
