Rose Acre Farms is recalling over 206 million eggs due to potential Salmonella contamination. The eggs were sold under various brand names, including Great Value (Walmart), and were distributed to retailers and food service companies across multiple states, primarily in the East Coast.
The recall stems from an outbreak of Salmonella Braenderup infections, which has affected at least 23 people and resulted in six hospitalizations. The source of the contamination is believed to be the Hyde County farm in North Carolina.
Consumers are advised to discard or return any recalled eggs with the plant number P-1065 printed on the carton. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, typically appearing within 12 to 72 hours of consuming contaminated food. While most people recover within a week, severe cases may require hospitalization. Vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk of serious complications.
Rose Acre Farms and the FDA are collaborating to investigate the source of the contamination and prevent further illnesses. The extensive recall aims to remove potentially contaminated eggs from the market and mitigate the ongoing outbreak. Consumers are urged to check the FDA website for a complete list of recalled products and to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of Salmonella infection.
