Unions’ War Support

The Socialist Equality Party (SEP) in Britain is campaigning against the Labour government’s “Strategic Defence Review” (SDR), a plan involving increased military spending and potential war preparations. The SEP argues this is driven by global capitalist crises and imperialist ambitions, particularly targeting Russia and China.

The SEP criticizes trade union leaders for supporting the SDR, claiming they are promoting nationalism and militarism by focusing on “defence jobs” to quell anti-war sentiment. The SEP views this as a betrayal of the working class, suppressing the necessary class struggle against employers and the Labour government’s policies. The SEP contends the SDR reflects a broader trend of escalating global tensions and the danger of world war, and is using the upcoming general election to oppose the SDR and advocate for international working-class unity. They argue that the Labour government’s commitment to NATO and military spending will further impoverish the working class while enriching corporations, and propose an alternative socialist program focused on global cooperation and the abolition of war.
