Verdi’s Betrayal: Halle/Leipzig Strike

Workers at DHL’s Halle/Leipzig airport are on strike demanding better wages and working conditions. The strike began amidst growing discontent over stagnant wages, increased workloads, and the rising cost of living. The *World Socialist Web Site* (WSWS) argues that the outcome of this strike is critical, impacting not only the workers involved but also setting a precedent for future labor struggles in Germany.

The article strongly criticizes the Verdi union, accusing it of betraying workers’ interests by previously negotiating a deal that failed to meet the demands of Deutsche Post DHL employees. The WSWS expresses concerns that Verdi will repeat this pattern and sabotage the current strike at Halle/Leipzig.

The article urges DHL workers to take the strike into their own hands, forming independent rank-and-file committees to bypass the union bureaucracy and ensure their demands are met. These committees would facilitate direct communication among workers, enabling them to formulate their own demands and strategies without relying on Verdi’s leadership. The WSWS suggests that these committees should unite with other workers across different sectors and countries to build a broader movement against exploitation and for improved working conditions. The article frames the strike as part of a larger international class struggle.
