The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) concluded that Scott Bloomquist, a well-known dirt late model racer, likely intentionally crashed his experimental amateur-built aircraft into a barn in Mooresburg, Tennessee, on September 15, 2022. Bloomquist, 59, was the sole occupant and was fatally injured.
The NTSB’s final report stated that the evidence suggested a deliberate act, citing the aircraft’s unusual flight path leading directly to the barn and a lack of pre-impact anomalies. The investigation included examination of the wreckage, radar data, and Bloomquist’s medical records and personal history.
While the report does not explicitly state Bloomquist’s motive, it notes that Bloomquist had a history of alcohol and drug use, legal and financial troubles, and was involved in multiple lawsuits. Further, interviews with family and friends indicated that Bloomquist had displayed concerning behavior prior to the crash. The autopsy revealed that Bloomquist tested positive for diphenhydramine (an antihistamine) and had a blood alcohol content of .04%, half the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle.
The NTSB ruled the probable cause as the pilot’s intentional collision with a barn, and that contributing factors were his decision-making, impaired judgment, and substance use.
