Honoring a Divisive Leader

Scott Morrison, former Prime Minister of Australia, has been awarded the US Legion of Merit by the American government for his role in strengthening the Australia-US alliance, particularly his efforts in establishing the AUKUS security pact. The article argues that this award underscores the increasing integration of Australia into US imperialism’s war plans against China.

The AUKUS pact, involving Australia, the US, and the UK, commits Australia to acquiring nuclear-powered submarines and advanced military technology, deepening its involvement in Washington’s confrontational policy towards China. The award highlights Morrison’s pro-US stance and his commitment to aligning Australia with US strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region. The article contends that AUKUS has heightened geopolitical tensions and risks a military conflict with China.

The article criticizes the Labor government for continuing and expanding upon the militarist policies initiated by the previous Liberal-National coalition government, thus solidifying the US-Australian alliance. Morrison’s receipt of the award, in the author’s view, demonstrates that his actions enjoyed the backing of Australia’s political and military institutions.
