What’s the Situation with Ukraine and Russia? Why Does It Matter to Us? A Progressive Perspective

The war between Ukraine and Russia, which began in February 2022, has become one of the most significant geopolitical crises of the 21st century. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia has led to devastating loss of life, widespread displacement, and severe economic repercussions not just for Ukraine and Russia, but for the entire world. From a progressive viewpoint, this conflict is not just about territorial disputes or national sovereignty—it is deeply connected to global issues of human rights, international law, energy politics, and the long-term stability of democratic values.

In this post, we will examine the current situation of the Russia-Ukraine war, the broader global implications, and why this conflict matters to people in the U.S. and around the world—especially from a progressive standpoint.

1. The Root Causes of the Conflict: History, Power, and Autocracy

The roots of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia can be traced back to historical tensions and the broader geopolitical rivalry between Russia and the West. For centuries, Ukraine has been caught in the crossfire of competing imperial powers. Once part of the Soviet Union, Ukraine became an independent nation in 1991 after the USSR dissolved, but its independence has been continuously threatened by Russian aggression.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has often viewed Ukraine as an integral part of Russia’s historical identity, and he sees its alignment with the West—including its interest in joining organizations like NATO and the European Union—as a direct challenge to Russia’s regional power. This sentiment was further fueled by the 2014 Euromaidan Revolution, when pro-Western Ukrainians ousted the pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych. Putin saw this shift as a threat to Russia’s sphere of influence and responded by annexing Crimea and supporting separatist groups in eastern Ukraine, ultimately leading to the full-scale invasion in 2022.

From a progressive perspective, this war is a struggle between authoritarianism and democracy. Russia’s actions represent an attempt to suppress Ukraine’s right to self-determination, while Ukraine’s desire to align with the West reflects a broader desire for democracy, human rights, and freedom from autocratic control. The U.S. and Europe, in supporting Ukraine, are standing up not just for Ukraine’s sovereignty but for international law and the rights of nations to choose their own political future.

2. The Humanitarian Crisis: The Cost of War

The human cost of the war is staggering. As of 2025, thousands of people have been killed, including civilians, soldiers, and children. More than 10 million Ukrainians have been displaced, seeking refuge both within Ukraine and across Europe. Cities like Kyiv, Mariupol, and Kharkiv have been reduced to rubble, with critical infrastructure, homes, hospitals, and schools destroyed by bombings and artillery.

For progressives, this conflict raises critical questions about the value of human life in the context of military intervention. While the global community, led by the United States and European Union, has provided substantial humanitarian aid to those affected, the tragedy underscores the disproportionate toll that wars take on the most vulnerable—the women, children, and minorities who have to bear the brunt of violence and displacement. The long-term effects of war—psychological trauma, loss of livelihood, and health crises—are immense and should guide the global response to the conflict.

3. The Global Impact: Why Does This War Matter Beyond Ukraine?

This war is not just about Ukraine—it has profound global consequences that directly affect countries across the world, including the United States.

A. Economic Disruption: Energy Prices and Global Supply Chains

The war in Ukraine has caused massive disruptions to global energy markets. Russia, as a major energy exporter, particularly of natural gas and oil, has seen its ability to supply energy to Europe severely impacted by international sanctions. The war has forced many European nations to wean themselves off Russian energy, driving up energy prices worldwide. This has compounded global inflationary pressures, making everyday goods and services more expensive.

The U.S. is not immune to these challenges, especially in a time when energy costs have skyrocketed. From a progressive perspective, this disruption highlights the need for a transition to renewable energy sources and energy independence, not just to safeguard national security but also to fight against the corporate greed that has been exacerbated by wars over fossil fuels. Clean energy investment should be prioritized as a way to break free from reliance on volatile energy markets and authoritarian regimes.

B. Refugee Crisis and Immigration

The war has also led to a growing refugee crisis, with millions of Ukrainians fleeing their homeland in search of safety. While many of these refugees have found sanctuary in neighboring European countries, others have sought asylum in the United States.

From a progressive point of view, this situation is a reminder of the importance of welcoming refugees and providing a humane response to displaced people. As countries across the world—especially the U.S.—grapple with immigration policy, we should be looking at how we can support individuals fleeing war, persecution, and violence. The conflict further underscores the urgent need for compassionate immigration reform that prioritizes human rights and addresses the underlying causes of displacement.

C. The Rise of Authoritarianism

The war has also fueled the rise of authoritarian rhetoric and policies across the world. In countries like Hungary, Poland, and even Brazil, leaders have used the war to stoke anti-refugee sentiment and consolidate power. The war in Ukraine offers a powerful reminder that unchecked authoritarianism and imperialism can lead to disastrous consequences, both domestically and abroad.

As progressives, it’s crucial that we stand firmly against the rise of nationalism and authoritarianism, not just in Russia but in other parts of the world. The global community must respond to the war in Ukraine by strengthening democratic institutions, promoting human rights, and ensuring that peace is the ultimate goal, not just in Ukraine, but everywhere.

4. How the United States is Involved: Support for Ukraine vs. Peace Negotiations

The United States has been a major player in the international response to the war in Ukraine. Initially, the U.S. provided military aid and economic sanctions against Russia, and has since been involved in humanitarian assistance for displaced Ukrainians.

From a progressive standpoint, it’s crucial that this support continues but also that the U.S. advocates for diplomatic solutions. Peace negotiations should be prioritized to avoid further loss of life and destruction. The U.S. must use its diplomatic weight to push for ceasefire talks and a peaceful resolution to the conflict, emphasizing international law and human rights as the guiding principles.

5. What We Can Learn: The Call for Global Peace

The Ukraine-Russia war is a tragic reminder of the destructive power of unchecked aggression and the global consequences of military conflicts. As progressives, we must demand that our government stop supporting militarism and instead focus on diplomacy, conflict resolution, and humanitarian aid.

This war is also a reminder of the importance of addressing the root causes of conflict—whether it’s authoritarianism, economic inequality, or resource competition—before they erupt into violence. We must move towards a world where peaceful cooperation, sustainable development, and global solidarity take precedence over war and destruction.
