A U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II pilot was held in military custody for nearly 50 days following an incident in South Carolina where the pilot ejected from the aircraft. The incident occurred in September 2023, and the pilot, whose name has not been publicly released, was held from September 19 until November 7.

The Marine Corps confirmed the pilot was held in pre-trial confinement due to concerns related to their behavior following the ejection. However, the specific charges remain unclear. An investigation into the incident is ongoing and is expected to be completed soon.

Reports initially surfaced regarding the pilot’s potential actions after the ejection, including allegations of damaging property and displaying erratic behavior. These reports contributed to the decision to confine the pilot.

While the pilot has been released from pre-trial confinement, the investigation continues, and potential charges could still be filed. The Marine Corps has emphasized its commitment to conducting a thorough and impartial inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the F-35B crash and the pilot’s subsequent actions. The focus remains on understanding the factors that led to the incident and determining the appropriate course of action moving forward.
