Travis Schwantes, a former Milwaukee public defender, has filed a federal lawsuit against the Wisconsin State Public Defender (SPD) alleging racial discrimination, retaliation, and a hostile work environment. Schwantes, who is biracial and identifies as Black, claims he endured years of discriminatory treatment, including being assigned disproportionately high caseloads of difficult clients, being subjected to racial slurs and stereotypes by colleagues and supervisors, and being denied opportunities for advancement that were given to his white counterparts.
The lawsuit details several specific instances, such as Schwantes being told to “leave his Blackness at the door” and being referred to as “the only Black guy in the office.” He also claims he was unfairly scrutinized and disciplined for minor infractions, while white employees who committed similar offenses faced no repercussions.
After reporting the alleged discrimination to SPD management, Schwantes claims he faced retaliation, including being transferred to a less desirable unit and being subjected to increased monitoring. He ultimately resigned from his position, citing the intolerable work environment.
The lawsuit seeks damages for lost wages, emotional distress, and reputational harm. Schwantes hopes the lawsuit will force the SPD to address its alleged systemic issues of racial bias and create a more equitable and inclusive work environment for all employees. The SPD has not yet publicly commented on the pending litigation.
