Houthis Seize UN HQ Amid Yemen Turmoil

Houthi rebels in Yemen stormed a United Nations building in the capital city of Sanaa, detaining at least 44 Yemeni employees. The Houthis, who control much of Yemen, allege that the UN is working with the Saudi-led coalition that has been fighting against them since 2015.

The detained UN employees are affiliated with various agencies, including the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. This incident follows a series of escalating tensions between the Houthis and international organizations. Prior to the raid, Houthi authorities had imposed restrictions on the movement and operations of UN staff in the country.

The UN has condemned the detentions and is demanding the immediate and unconditional release of its staff. The situation is raising concerns about the safety and security of humanitarian workers in Yemen and the ability of the UN to effectively deliver aid in the war-torn nation. The Houthis have yet to publicly comment on the reason for the detentions. The incident further complicates the already dire humanitarian crisis in Yemen, where millions are reliant on aid for survival.
