Charlotte’s Presbyterian Fallout

religious book in church

Rev. Dr. J Herbert Nelson, II, the outgoing stated clerk of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), delivered a farewell sermon reflecting on his six years leading the denomination. He expressed feeling “ashamed” for some of the church’s past actions, specifically mentioning the treatment of Black people within the Presbyterian church and the broader history of white supremacy.

Nelson called for the church to actively dismantle systemic racism, acknowledging the denomination’s historical complicity in perpetuating racial injustice. He lamented the slow pace of change and the resistance he encountered while advocating for racial equity and reconciliation. He challenged the congregation and the broader church to confront their own biases and prejudices.

He highlighted the historical context of the church’s development alongside the institution of slavery and segregation, emphasizing the lasting impact on the present. Nelson also addressed other issues, including poverty, inequality, and the need for greater inclusivity. He urged the church to become more active in social justice issues and to stand in solidarity with marginalized communities. His sermon was a powerful call for self-reflection, repentance, and a renewed commitment to creating a more just and equitable world.
