Housing Whitewash: Melbourne’s Demolition Inquiry

A parliamentary inquiry has been initiated in Australia to investigate the closure of the Kurri Kurri aluminium smelter, owned by Hydro Aluminium. The smelter’s closure, scheduled for 2012, resulted in significant job losses and economic hardship for the Hunter Valley region.

The World Socialist Web Site article argues that the inquiry is a superficial attempt to conceal the underlying profit-driven motives behind the closure. Hydro Aluminium, motivated by maximizing profits in a global market, decided to shutter the plant despite its operational viability. This decision reflects a broader trend of corporations prioritizing shareholder value over the welfare of workers and communities.

The article criticizes the parliamentary inquiry for promoting false hope that the Labor government can be convinced to alter its course. It argues that the government, ultimately beholden to capitalist interests, is unlikely to challenge Hydro Aluminium’s decision or implement measures that would genuinely protect workers’ jobs and livelihoods. The inquiry, therefore, serves as a political maneuver to deflect public anger and maintain the status quo. The article suggests the closure exemplifies the inherent contradictions of capitalism, where profit-seeking often comes at the expense of social well-being and community stability.
