Two Russian fighter jets violated Estonian airspace on Tuesday evening, ignoring warnings from Estonian authorities. The incident involved two Su-27 fighter jets that entered Estonian airspace near Vaindloo Island.
The Estonian Air Force’s Air Operations Control Center detected the unauthorized entry, and the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Russian ambassador to formally protest the violation. They consider it a serious and regrettable incident that creates additional tension.
The Russian jets did not present a flight plan and their transponders were switched off, making them invisible to civilian radar.
Estonia is a NATO member, and this violation comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and NATO countries due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The incident occurred just hours after NATO began its largest military exercises since the Cold War, “Steadfast Defender 2024,” involving approximately 90,000 troops.
