Following President Dina Boluarte’s approval rating plummeting to 5%, Peru’s largest union, the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP), called a national strike on September 25, 2024. The strike aimed to address the economic crisis, unemployment, and corruption.
The CGTP demanded higher wages, price controls on basic goods, and an end to privatization. They also protested Boluarte’s administration, calling for a new constitution and the release of former President Pedro Castillo.
The strike reflected growing social unrest in Peru amid a deep political crisis. Boluarte, who took office after Castillo’s ouster and subsequent imprisonment, faces widespread disapproval. The CGTP’s demands highlight the acute economic hardships faced by Peruvian workers, exacerbated by rising inflation and job insecurity.
The government’s response to the strike remains uncertain, but past actions suggest a willingness to use force against protesters. The CGTP’s move signals a significant escalation in the opposition to Boluarte’s government and underscores the urgent need for addressing the underlying economic and political grievances fueling social unrest in Peru. Though promises of anti-corruption measures exist, skepticism remains regarding the Boluarte administration’s commitment to fulfilling these promises.
