Iowa Superintendent’s ICE Shock

Jose Quinones, the superintendent of the Des Moines Public Schools, was arrested by ICE after returning to the United States from a trip to Mexico for a family matter. Quinones, a naturalized U.S. citizen since 2016, was detained at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Quinones was born in Mexico and entered the U.S. illegally as a child. He later became a lawful permanent resident and eventually a citizen. ICE claims his naturalization was based on a prior conviction and removed him administratively on January 4, 2024.

The Des Moines school board expressed full support for Quinones, stating they believe he is being unjustly targeted. They have contacted Iowa’s congressional delegation for assistance and are exploring legal options. The arrest has caused significant concern and confusion within the community.

Quinones’ background check was fully vetted when he was hired in 2022. The school board and community are shocked and disturbed by his arrest, emphasizing Quinones’ exemplary service and commitment to the students of Des Moines. His supporters question the timing and motivations behind ICE’s actions. He has since been released from custody and is on administrative leave.
