Ukraine’s Air Force reported that Russia launched a wave of drones, specifically Shahed-131/136 type, violating both its airspace and that of NATO member Romania during an overnight attack on Ukrainian infrastructure, particularly around the Izmail port along the Danube River.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is calling on its allies, particularly Romania, to investigate the incident thoroughly. They emphasized that the drones posed a significant threat not only to Ukraine but also to the security of neighboring countries.
Romanian officials initially denied any Russian drone incursions into their national territory. However, after further investigation following Ukraine’s claims, Romania’s Defense Ministry acknowledged that fragments of a drone, resembling those used in attacks on Ukraine, were found in a uninhabited area.
The incident highlights the escalating risks of the war in Ukraine spilling over into neighboring NATO countries and the growing concerns about Russia’s increasingly bold tactics in the region, particularly near vital infrastructure points.
