Solidarity’s Shadow

John McDonnell, a former Shadow Chancellor, addressed a meeting in Liverpool organized by the Stop the War Coalition and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, aiming to revive his image as a left-wing figure. He criticized the Labour Party’s current leadership, particularly Keir Starmer, for abandoning socialist principles. He painted a picture of a Labour Party dominated by Blairites and right-wing figures, sidelining genuine socialists and hindering the development of socialist policies.

McDonnell focused on the influence of figures like Peter Mandelson, framing Starmer’s policies as a betrayal of Labour’s historical commitment to social justice and anti-imperialism. The speech largely avoided concrete policy proposals, instead focusing on the perceived ideological shift within the Labour Party and the need for socialists to resist what he characterized as a rightward drift.
