A newly discovered object, designated 2023 FW13, is orbiting the Sun in sync with Earth, making it a quasi-satellite of our planet. Unlike the Moon, which is gravitationally bound to Earth, 2023 FW13 follows a more complex and distant path. It orbits the Sun, but its path keeps it in Earth’s general vicinity.
According to calculations, 2023 FW13 has been a quasi-satellite of Earth since around 100 BC, and is projected to remain so until approximately 3700 AD. This exceptionally long orbital stability makes it unique amongst known quasi-satellites of Earth.
The object is estimated to be about 20 meters (66 feet) in diameter, making it too small to be a planet. Its discovery was made using the Pan-STARRS telescope in Hawaii and confirmed by follow-up observations.
While 2023 FW13 orbits the Sun, its trajectory is significantly influenced by the gravitational pull of both the Sun and Earth. It essentially travels around the Sun on a similar timeline to Earth but in a corkscrew pattern that takes it far away from Earth’s immediate vicinity, much further than the Moon. Due to its unstable orbit, it is unlikely to be suitable for a future space mission.
