Payroll Losses: COVID Echo

On September 30, a significant event unfolded in the US labor market, marked by both private sector layoffs reminiscent of the early pandemic and a record-breaking mass resignation within the federal workforce. Over 150,000 federal employees and contractors were officially removed from payrolls, representing the largest exodus of federal workers in US history. This mass resignation was triggered by buyouts seemingly induced by DOGE. The buyouts have effectively reduced the workforce, and it remains to be seen whether the positions will be restored in the future.
