Shutdown Showdown: Trump’s Blame Game

A recent Yahoo News/YouGov poll reveals significant divisions in American perceptions of the January 6th Capitol riot and Donald Trump’s role. A majority of Americans, 54%, believe Trump bears “a lot” or “some” of the blame for the attack. Conversely, 41% believe he bears “not much” or “no” blame.

The poll highlights stark partisan divides. A large majority of Democrats place blame on Trump, while Republicans largely absolve him. Independents are more divided, with a plurality assigning blame to Trump.

The survey also explored perceptions of the House select committee investigating the attack. While a significant portion of Americans believe the committee is conducting a fair investigation, partisan viewpoints heavily influence opinions. Democrats largely view the investigation as fair, while Republicans predominantly perceive it as unfair and politically motivated.

Furthermore, the poll examined beliefs about the severity of the riot. A majority of Americans view the attack on the Capitol as a serious threat to democracy. However, Republicans are more likely to downplay the events of January 6th, viewing them as either not serious or as a legitimate form of protest.
