Fiber Optic Spies

Russia is increasingly utilizing a novel drone technology that employs fiber optic cables to maintain communication and control over extended ranges, especially in electronic warfare environments where traditional radio frequency links are vulnerable. These drones, such as a modified version of the Orlan-10, deploy thin, robust fiber optic lines to relay data and commands, bypassing jamming and interception efforts.

The primary advantage of this system is its enhanced security and resilience against electronic warfare. While sacrificing mobility by tethering the drone, the fiber optic connection provides a secure and high-bandwidth data link, enabling operators to maintain consistent control and receive high-resolution imagery or other sensor data.

Reports suggest that the Russian military has been deploying these fiber-optic drones to adjust artillery fire, conduct reconnaissance, and assess battle damage, particularly in contested areas of Ukraine. The system’s utility is limited by the physical tether, restricting the drone’s operational radius, but the secure communication offers significant benefits in specific tactical situations. The use of fiber optic cables represents an innovative approach to overcoming electronic warfare challenges and maintaining drone operations in highly contested communication environments.
