SLO County Crash: Two Fatalities, Traffic Delays

Two people were killed in a fiery multi-vehicle crash on Highway 101 in Santa Barbara County, California, on a Sunday night. The collision occurred near Buellton and involved at least three vehicles, causing a complete closure of the northbound lanes for several hours.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that a black sedan, driven by a 19-year-old man, was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it collided head-on with a white sedan occupied by two individuals. The white sedan immediately burst into flames. The driver of the black sedan was transported to the hospital with major injuries.

Both occupants of the white sedan were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A third vehicle, a gray sedan, was also involved in the collision after striking the wreckage. The driver of the gray sedan sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, focusing on why the black sedan was traveling in the wrong direction. Drugs or alcohol are being investigated as possible factors. The northbound lanes of Highway 101 were reopened early Monday morning after the on-scene investigation and clean-up were completed.
