Medford, Massachusetts Police Chief Jack Buckley is leaving his post amid allegations of creating a hostile work environment and retaliating against officers. The situation stems from an incident in June 2023 involving Officer Michael Marchese, who alleges Buckley ordered him to cease assisting a female resident with a noise complaint because Buckley knew the resident and believed the situation was being handled appropriately.
Following this incident, Marchese filed a formal complaint against Buckley, claiming the Chief’s actions were improper and an abuse of power. Subsequently, Marchese alleges he faced retaliation from Buckley, including being denied overtime opportunities and facing heightened scrutiny.
An independent investigator substantiated Marchese’s claims, finding that Buckley had indeed interfered in the noise complaint and that Marchese had faced retaliation. The report also revealed a broader pattern of a hostile work environment fostered by Buckley, with multiple officers corroborating the allegations of favoritism and unfair treatment.
Buckley denies the allegations against him. He stated that his departure is amicable and unrelated to the investigation, asserting he is leaving to pursue other opportunities. However, the timing of his departure, occurring shortly after the release of the investigative report, suggests a direct connection. The city has agreed to pay Buckley six months’ salary as part of his separation agreement. The mayor has stated that the city is moving forward and will conduct a search for a new police chief.
