History Through a Short Lens

The 2025 Berlinale’s short film selection prominently featured works grappling with historical themes. Many of the 20 films, representing 18 countries, explored the enduring impact of the past on the present. Several films addressed the complex legacies of colonialism and its continuing effects on societies and individuals. Some narratives delved into personal and collective memory, examining how historical events shape identity and relationships. Political struggles, social injustices, and forgotten histories were recurring motifs. A number of films used creative and experimental techniques to convey historical narratives, moving beyond traditional documentary or historical drama formats. These films often focused on specific moments or individuals to illuminate broader historical processes. The short film format provided a concise and impactful medium for exploring these complex and often sensitive subjects, inviting viewers to reflect on the relationship between history and contemporary life. The diversity of perspectives and approaches offered a nuanced understanding of how history is remembered, interpreted, and contested across different cultures and contexts.
