Sakeik, a Palestinian professor, delivered powerful testimony detailing her harrowing 140-day internment and the inhumane conditions she endured in US detention centers. She recounted her abrupt arrest while traveling with her family, despite possessing valid documentation.
Sakeik described the systematic degradation within the detention facilities, including overcrowded cells, inadequate medical care, and unsanitary conditions. She witnessed detainees being denied basic necessities and subjected to verbal and physical abuse by guards. The professor also highlighted the psychological toll of indefinite detention, emphasizing the constant fear and uncertainty experienced by detainees, many of whom were asylum seekers and refugees. She witnessed many individuals being held for months, or even years, without any explanation or legal recourse. She also described that they were only given food twice a day, the amount of food was very little and not nutritional. Many of the detainees lost weight during that time. Sakeik’s testimony points to a systemic problem of human rights violations within the US immigration detention system.
