South Korean officials said their troops exchanged fire with North Korea Sunday morning along the tense land border dividing the two countries.
North Korean troops fired several bullets at a South Korean guard post inside the heavily fortified border between the countries, the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul said in a text to NBC News. No casualties or damages to equipment were reported.
The Koreas are split along the Demilitarized Zone that was originally created as a buffer. But despite what its name suggests, the DMZ is the world’s most heavily fortified border.
This does not sound good. Ever since the end of the Cold War, the Korean DMZ line has become one of the most heavily fortified demarcation lines in history. The reason why is because the two Koreas are still technically at war with one another, for the Korean war ended with an armistice, not a treaty, with the two nations. This means that at any moment, conflict can break out between the two nations and the Korean War can resume once again. The incident that happened Sunday morning is very chilling, and it shows that tensions are still high between North and South Korea, even to this very day. The news of this incident came just days after Kim Jong Un made a public appearance after being presumed sick or dead.
The situation at the Korean DMZ line needs to be monitored closely, for if conflict between the two nations were to erupt, it could prove devasting for both the North and South Koreans that would get caught in the crossfire. Millions of lives will be lost on both sides of the conflict, and North Korea could potentially launch a nuclear missile at South Korea and its allies, which could instantly vaporize cities within its range. We have to hope things won’t escalate between the two nations, for a war between the two Koreas would most certainly get allies of the two nations involved, and a war on that scale would be disastrous for many people around the world, especially since the allies of both nations have a nuclear arsenal.
