Postal Showdown

Canada Post presented new contract offers last Friday that reflect the Liberal government’s plan to restructure the post office by cutting tens of thousands of full-time jobs. The offers aim to implement these planned cuts through specific contract language. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has yet to formally respond, but union sources have indicated the offers are deeply troubling.

The proposals seek to expand precarious part-time work, erode job security, and increase workload and pressure on postal workers. This strategy aims to weaken the union and allow Canada Post to eliminate full-time positions through attrition and increased reliance on a low-wage, temporary workforce. The offers also include provisions that would make it harder for workers to claim injuries and illnesses, potentially forcing them to work while sick or injured.

Furthermore, the proposed changes would impact delivery standards and potentially lead to service reductions, particularly in rural and remote areas. The government’s broader agenda is to make Canada Post more profitable by shifting costs onto workers and reducing service quality. This development occurs amidst growing concerns about the increasing cost of living and the erosion of job security for workers across various sectors.
